Park Chan-wook Is Back To Work!
Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...
... you can learn from:
The Master (2012)
Peggy: And this is where we are at. At the lowest level. To have to explain ourselves, for what? For what we do, we have to grovel? The only way to defend ourselves is to attack. If we don't do that we will lose every battle that we are engaged in. We will *never* dominate our environment the way we should unless we attack! And the city, city's just noise. I know the city. I know its rotten secrets, its filthy lies and secrets. They... invited us here and welcomed us. Only to throw us down. And kick us out. It's a grim joke.
A happy 50 to the great Amy Adams today! I very much hope that Nightbitch, her upcoming movie with the magnificent Marielle Heller, is Marielle Heller's fourth straight masterpiece. And if it gets Amy her long overdue Oscar that'd be even sweller, although I feel as if the whole "female werewolf movie called Nightbitch" thing might limit its Oscar chances. But crazier things have happened! And we'll know how it's being received in just a couple weeks since it's premiering at TIFF on September 7th. (And then it hits theaters on December 6th.) Tell me in the comments -- What's your favorite Amy Adams performance? (Just don't say Hillbilly Elegy. We're pretending that doesn't exist.)

Good Morning, World
Actually I should retitle this post "Sad Morning, World" because I have come to make you cry this morning! Or you'll cry if you're an easy crier like me anyway -- this 2023 song by The Pretenders came up randomly on my playlist this morning on my work commute and I was like, "This is lovely, but why the fuck do I have this song on my phone?" Turns out it's Jonny Greenwood doing the string arrangement and conducting the orchestra on this song, that's why -- I must have read that last year, downloaded the song, and promptly forgot about it until today. Anyway this song is tremendously beautiful and sad as fuck but once I started listening to it I listened to it my entire commute and now I am steeped in this mood o' melancholia. So you should be as well, is my point. Okay okay here is something to cheer you up after:

The Forever Alien / Aliens Debate
I'm no great fan of Ridley Scott nowadays, but I concede that he earned his rep as a master filmmaker once upon a time with his first few films and Alien is I think his crown jewel -- it's a perfect horror film with the series' greatest cast of characters. That said James Cameron's sequel is every inch as good to my eye, just scratching a very different kick-ass action movie itch. Anyway these two movies and the Giger-fueled nightmare worlds they built are the reason why this franchise will always rank among my favorites, and I am entirely incapacitated when asked to choose. So I am making you choose. And feel free to make your case in the comments.
People who defend Ridley Scott as still being a good filmmaker are... just not right

On a related note I re-watched Prometheus and half of Alien: Covenant last night and lord what slop they are. Beautiful looking slop, but good grief Ridley can't string together a coherent experience anymore. I do love staring at the utterly gorgeous cast of Prometheus though, and the scene where the snake thing kills Rafe Spall & Sean Harris is absolutely top tier horror.
