The Two Faces of Cooper Hoffman

As I prepared this post -- yes, I do the work! -- I realized I kept typing "I Want Your Sex Movie" into Amazon and I think this may've been Gregg Araki's long game. He's going after our algorithms. I mean it's not like my algorithm needed much dirtying up -- lol as if -- but for those of Gen Z who the movie has words for re: a fear of sex, this one's for you. Anyway -- Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex movie has landed on VOD today! You can rent it right here, although you might want to wait for that price to come down -- 25 bucks is aggressive for a digital rental, yo. (The blu-ray, a format I much prefer, is out in October and you can pre-order that right here.) Not that the movie isn't worth all the money however you manage to see it -- click here if you never read my review. This movie is pure pop silliness and I had so much fun with it. And it also finally landed me a Cooper Hoffman crush -- he's the best of the latest crop of nepo-babies by far. Look at that face! Aww!

Superhero, Gay Monk, What Can't Kit Do

Everything really is coming up Kit Connor -- having just been cast to play Cyclops in Marvel's new X-Men line-up, the Heartstopper star has got two projects clamoring for my attention in particular. (And that's besides Andrew Haigh's A Long Winter, which I'll be seeing at NYFF.) First up today comes news that he will star as the real life 1980s murderer and tabloid sensation Robert Chambers in PRƎPPY from (drumroll please) Zola director Janicza Bravo. As massive Zola-heads we're already buying our tickets -- Diana Silvers from Ma and Booksmart will be playing Chambers' victim Jennifer Levin; if you google what Chambers looked like you'll see Kit's casting is extraordinarily generous but then what's new. 

The second project of Kit's that I cannot believe I haven't given any updates on since we first heard rumors of it in May, since there have indeed been updates -- the movie is called Rapture and it's about mediveal monks battling the undead, killed by a plague that makes their corpses rise, and it is going to shoot this fall. And as mentioned before it will also star Kit's Warfare pally Will Poulter as well as MNPP fave Manu Rios. Oh and it's gay -- two of the monks, who grew up together, share a "deep, passionate relationship." I'm assuming that the monk-boys in love will be Connor & Rios since they're the same age while Poulter is a decade older, but if they all want to have a threesome while the zombies bang on the door I wouldn't complain. Quite the opposite, actually!

I Love Black Balls

I keep meaning to at the very least make myself a mental list of the movies set to come out this fall that I personally am most excited to see -- because of course me me and more me -- cuz otherwise it's chaos and white noise and I have no idea what's happening half the time. Even better would be a list here on the site but that would take me being able to focus for longer than ten minutes and... that's just not been possible lately. (Have you SEEN the state of the world? My god.) 

(Julio!) Anyway I bring this up because two of the movies that would make it onto said list have come up this morning -- the first was Luca Guadagnino's Artificial which just dropped news of its world premiete at NYFF on October 5th. And here's the second -- the teaser trailer for La bola negra (The Black Ball), the extremely gay sounding new film from Spanish directors  Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi which grabbed our attention first when it premiered at Cannes to extremely gay notices. Here I'll just let you watch the trailer and see for yourselves:

I've never seen any of  Javier Calvo & Javier Ambrossi's Spanish T.V. series (Paquita Salas and Veneno) but from what I understand they're popular and extremely queer, kind of heirs to Almodovar -- the fact that Penelope Cruz is in their new movie only seems to cement that status for me, but if y'all who know of their work wanna enlighten me more have at it. I'm purposefully keeping myself ignorant (full stop, what's new) of specifics on La bola negra as I do with most movies I know I want to see these days -- I look forward to going in empty-brained and being surprised. But even in my ignorance I'm extremely excited about this one. (The fact that I do know that Cruz and Glenn Close and my beloved Julio Torres are in it, alongside a swath of extremely hot Spanish guys, isn't hurting.) So when will we all be able to see it? It is playing TIFF but I'm not going to TIFF -- thankfully Netflix is dropping the film ("theatrically") on October 16th. Gimme!

NYFF Gets Artificial!

If you're in the downtown NYC vicinity I apologize for terrifying you with my yelp of excitement in the past half an hour -- it escaped me before anything could be done once I read the email from the New York Film Fest that they have just added the world premiere of Luca Guadagnino's new film Artificial to this year's line-up! I'd begun to think this might not make it out this year, given the hullaballoo when Amazon dumped it because the tech-bros don't like the big mean movie that makes fun of their stupid A.I. bullshit. Thank the movie gods aka the folks at Neon who picked the movie up and the folks at NYFF who got it onto the slate. This just made my day. I know most opinions were mixed the last time Luca was at NYFF -- i.e. last year with After the Hunt -- but I fucking love that movie, and will not be psyched out by the naysayers. Gimme that sweet sweet "Yura Borisov with hair" movie, baby!

Picture Me This

Although I have a love-hate relationship with Zack Snyder's movies I think it's a little less contentious than most -- I loved Dawn of the Dead and 300 unabashedly, and Watchmen and Sucker Punch both have pieces worth defending. If I had to watch hetero-bombast I always preferred his more Kinsey-middle version to Michael Bay's! Anyway it wasn't until he waded into the swamp of making really shitty Superman movies (Henry Cavill's pecs excused) that I became more and more exasperated by him -- yes I have seen "his" cut of Justice League and yes it still sucks. Anyway he seems to've wanted a change as well so we've been keeping track of his next movie The Last Photograph for awhile now -- okay mainly because Snyder has been posting beefcake-y photos of his leading men ...

The Last Photograph is set to premiere at TIFF soon -- in it Martin plays an ex-DEA agent who enlists the aid of a "junkie photographer" (Fee) to find the kidnapped children of a murdered diplomat in South America. I don't know what to make of the politics and exoticist issues on display in this trailer -- let's hope Snyder has delivered something thoughtful and not jingoistic. One can dream! I was trapped on the subway for an extra hour coming into work this morning so I am running terribly, terrifically behind -- so here's a gif of the great, sexy Michael Sheen on Masters of Sex that I saw on Tumblr the other day and made sure to snatch. Kinda can't believe I didn't make this gif myself back when Masters of Sex was airing as I loved that show and Michael Sheen therein -- such a great show and such a great performer. Where the hell has he been anyway? I guess Good Omens, which I never watched -- did any of you watch Good Omens? Should I? There is the whole Neil Gaiman of that now though, yuck. Oh his name was on that wild cast list for the next season of Murderbot -- that'll be great! We love Michael Sheen in this house. Anyway hi happy Monday let me get my shit together and perhaps something will come of it...

Oh Lordy

So I suddenly have a brief errand to run this afternoon that's gonna take me offline for a couple of hours -- please allow this recent photo of Jacob Elordi, star of this weekend's new film The Dog Stars, to hold and keep you close until I'm back. Not to pile on extra sad with all of our queer legends dying this week but today would've been the one and only Paul Reubens 74th birthday and good god I miss him. It's been three years since he passed but I still think about him all the time -- it probably helps that Pee-wee memorabilia is scattered all over my home. including the holiday cards that I got every year from the man himself in the wake of him reaching out to me after I said some nice things on this very site regarding the above movie. (I don't care if I bring this up too much -- it's the great highlight of my "professional" life.) And his birthday and my birthday especially I think about Paul, because we'd also text each other on those days -- he'd send funny little gifs to me on mine and I'd send him one on his day. I was always too starstruck to be too chatty but he always replied, sincere and grateful. Since Dolly passed this week he's been on my mind too -- not just because of the below photo that made the rounds, but because they were both paragons of decency and humor from my childhood who taught me as much about how to be a good person as any actual human being in my orbit. I fail every day at living up to the standard they set but you know both of them would just giggle and say well get on with it. Being good is an every day effort, but look at the legacies of joy they left. What's better?

Space Fassys

Imagine my delight when I went looking for a recent photo of Michael Fassbender and stumbled upon this gem of him posing with a fan on vacation a couple of weeks ago! He's all but quit doing press over the past several years -- if only we'd understood how good we had it back during his slutty photoshoot heyday. (Actually I did -- I understood how good we were having it then.) Anyway that made me happy to see -- are any of you watching The Agency? I have been and think the show really came into its own in its second season -- I really kind of love it now. With a cast that also includes Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro, and Harriet Sansom Harris, well how the hell could I not? Anyway y'all should give a shot if you haven't, with the understanding that its second season is when it really picks up.

But that's not why we're here! We're here because Sir Ridley Scott has a new movie coming out this week (The Dog Stars with that other whippet-shaped-man Jacob Elordi) so he's doing interviews and in one he just said that he's working on a third Alien prequel film to round out his Prometheus / Alien: Covenant trilogy, which would follow the further wackadoo exploits of Fassbender's David character. Even though I think both of these movies are hot messes to various degrees (ones I can nevertheless watch over and over again) I'm all for it -- because hopefully Sir Scott makes the Michael Fassbender Clone Throuple of our dreams a reality this go! Third movie -- three gay Fassys! That's the rule!

Breeder Me

Are any of you watching the show The Shards, Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' book? I am watching it but it's sort of a hate-watch -- I think all of the young actors who make up the main cast are fairly awful. (How is that nepo-baby supposed to be Richard Gere's son??? I refuse to believe they are even related.) That said the older actors playing the adults on the show are pretty much the exact opposite, a delight to watch to a tee; I would much rather be watching a show about them. And when Glee actor Dot-Marie Jones showed up in an episode that I watched this past weekend playing a porn director that went triply true. So much fun. And seeing her also reminded me that I saw and loved a horror movie called Breeder earlier this year at Tribeca that she's the villain in -- and well whaddya know the trailer for Breeder just dropped today and who do you think...

... was quoted? Me, that's who! And that my quote drops over DMJ getting her face absolutely tongue-wrecked by one of her adorable doggies is very very funny to me because that's one of my boyfriend's triggers -- he finds it absolutely repulsive when people let dogs lick their face haha. That gif's for you, sweetums! Anyway Breeder is extremely fucked up and has far more disgusting things in store for y'all than some face-licking, but you can find out all about that when it lands in theaters on October 16th. Jack O'Connell Seven Times

I was just earlier putting Danny Boyle's upcoming movie Ink into my calendar -- it's hitting some theaters on December 11th and then lands on Netflix in January -- and then wham, suddenly this cover-shoot of the movie's leading man Jack O'Connell dropped at Variety. Kismet! Sexy kismet. It's a long chat and I haven't read it yet, feel free to join me over lunch and do just that at this link. This is the movie (based on the play) about Rupert Murdoch's takeover of The Sun  tabloid -- Murdoch's played by Guy Pearce while Jack is the editor Larry Lamb; also joining the boys is Claire Foy as a reporter. The movie will premiere at Venice so I guess we'll know then if any of these extremely under-appreciated actors will be in the awards conversation but that'd be nice, as they're all overdue as hell. (Jack should have a statue for Sinners and Guy should have a statue for The Brutalist dammit.) Until then hit the jump to stare at pretty little Jack some more...
