... And Thank Goodness For That

Who went to see Heart Eyes this weekend?
Or maybe you're saving it for Valentine's?

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

 ... you can learn from:

Wild at Heart (1990)

Lula: Dell said that trust in the spirit of Christmas was destroyed by ideas being controlled by aliens wearing black gloves. These aliens would get Dell to do all kinds of things. Then he'd carry on about the weather, talk about how rainfall is controlled by aliens on earth. Aunt Rootie told Dell that one day he would realize that the alien wearing the black gloves was him, and him alone.

Ain't that the truth.
A happy 58 to Laura Dern today!

Meet Barley Keoughan

Two of our favorite working actors with fairly similar names -- namely Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough -- who have both worked with Andrea Arnold previously and to great effect (him in Bird and her in American Honey) are next teaming up together! They will star in the next film from Beanpole director  Kantemir Balagov -- as if we needed further proof that these two are the real deal, seeking out real filmmakers making challenging works of art, there we are. I personally felt mixed on Beanpole but it was striking nonetheless and it certainly made Balagov one to keep an eye on. The new movie will be called Butterfly Jam and it's about "a tight-knit U.S. community of Circassian immigrants and a complicated relationship between a father and son, in which the son imbues his father with qualities he doesn’t actually possess." Okay! I'll watch that. And since we're here already hit the jump for a couple bonus shots of Barry that I've never posted before...

Good Morning, World

Nothing like a metallic leather codpiece to kick off a Monday morning the right way -- everybody say thanks to actor Zane Phillips for knowing what we need! This photo-shoot's for Numero Netherlands magazine (via) -- what was it I said last week when I posted that video of Gus Kenworthy porky-pigging it for charity? Oh right -- out gay celebrities just know what we need better. And that applies to everything. Whether it's porky-pigging it for charity of wearing metallic leather codpiece to kick off a Monday morning or everything in between! Now listen to this gay and hit the jump for the entire fetish-forward photoshoot...

Mason Gooding's Pointy End

While you can never go wrong with watching the original My Bloody Valentine every February 14th it's nice to have a few options, so it was cool of Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben to give us a new one with his rom-com meets slasher Heart Eyes, starring the gorgeous Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt, that is out in theaters today -- click on over to Pajiba to read my thoughts upon it! Honestly Valentines is my second least favorite holiday (after New Years ugh) so watching lovers be butchered is always my kind of way to celebrate. But you do you!

This Valentines Day remember there is a slot for every hole!

Jacob Elordi's Gay Spring

Deadline is reporting today that On Swift Horses, the movie that has Jacob Elordi and Babylon star Diego Calva falling hot and heavy for one another, has found itself a release date -- April 25th! I told you about this movie right here last fall before it played at TIFF -- I purposefully avoided everything that came out about the film (reviews etc) during that film festival because I am keeping myself pure as a virgin for my boys. Just this once. The film also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Will "Leather Daddy" Poulter and it was written and direced by Daniel Minahan who made the terrific 2001 movie Series 7: The Contenders, which I forgot existed until right this minute -- remember that movie??? I should see that one again! Now there's a movie that deserves a good boutique-label blu-ray or 4K upgrade stat. Minahan has worked on mostly TV stuff since then, including Game of Thrones and Fellow Travelers. Let's hope he carries those series' sexposition exploits up onto the big screen!

I Would Say 'Never Forget"...

... but I have already forgotten.

Meet The Monster's Makers

A series of films curated by Nosferatu director Robert Eggers kicked off last night at Film at Lincoln Center here in NYC with a screening of Eggers' latest followed by a Q&A with three of the film's Oscar-nominated artists (very happy to discover that cinematographer Jarin Blaschke is super fine) and Eggers himself on hand -- oh and me! I was there too! I actually had no idea that any of these people were showing up -- I just wanted to see my beloved Nosferatu on a big screen again, and for the first time in 35mm. (It looked gorgeous.) You can see Eggers' series in full at this link -- so so many excellent and interesting picks but that's hardly a shock. I'm at least going back to see Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast, if not more, over the weekend.  Anyway this Q&A was a lovely surprise and I took a few photos and videos -- the one just below has him giving just a teeny tiny hint of what we can expect from his next film, that medeival werewolf movie I told you about a couple of weeks back, but hit the jump for even more...

Get Ready For Big Hokum

Oddity was one of last year's absolute best horror movies -- here is my review and it's available on blu-ray and it's streaming on Shudder; go watch it if you haven't yet! I couldn't love it more. Anyway great news today that the film's director Damian McCarthy (who also made the ace 2020 spook-fest Caveat) has lined up his next movie -- it's to be titled Hokum and it will star Adam Scott! It sounds very Stephen-Kingy too -- Scott will play a horror author who goes to a secluded cabin to scatter his parents ashes only to discover the cabin is haunted by a witch! Great title, great plot, great actor, great great director -- we are there!

Today's Fanboy Delusion

Today I'd rather be...

... porky-pigging with Gus Kenworthy.

Gus calls the wearing of a shirt with nothing else on "Winnie-the-Poohing" it in his Insta-stories but I've always prefered "Porky-Pigging" (see here) because there is a sexier connotation to "pig" then there is "pooh" -- right? You tell me:

I am always asking the important questions! Anyway he shared this video on his Insta and it's for a good cause so go check it out -- I say this fairly often at these sorts of moments but having out gay celebrities is such a blessing. Such a blessing. Hit the jump for several more images of note from the video...

The slasher rom-com Heart Eyes is out this weekend and my review of it will be coming soon but first let's stare at the movie's leading hunk, a true Scream King of the moment, for a hot (emphasis on hot) sec. (via) Good lord. Good grief. Good...ing. Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Pic of the Day

I don't know how this mo0vie escapes my eyeballs until now -- perhaps it's the fact that this movie isn't even listed on the director Mark Jenkin's IMDb page yet -- but there is apparently a movie called Rose of Nevada being made that co-stars George Mackay and Callum Turner! Two of my most favorite white boys of the moment, smooshing themselves like chocolate and peanut butter deliciousness -- I can hardly wait. The movie, according to The Film Stage where I found this photo, is called Rose of Nevada and it's a time-travel thriller -- if you've seen either of Jenkin's previous films Bait of Enys' Men then you know that prospect is hardly a simple one in his wildly weird hands. Here is their plot description:

"“In a forgotten fishing village, a boat mysteriously appears in the old harbour. The Rose of Nevada, lost at sea with all hands 30 years ago, has returned. For the few who remember, it’s a sign. The Rose of Nevada must go out to sea again, maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn. Nick (MacKay) takes a job aboard the boat in an attempt to provide for his young family. Alongside him, newly arrived Liam (Turner) joins the crew, desperate to escape his past. They head to sea and after a successful trip return to harbour. But something is amiss. They’ve slipped back in time and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew.”"

Good Morning, World

Colman Domingo, a gay black man, is on the cover of Time magazine -- I'd say that is a beautiful way to begin a day, wouldn't you? Gorgeous, even! Lord knows I'm not religious but this is a hallelujah moment if ever there was one. Congrats to him, you can read the interview with him right here. Y'all know I'm rooting for Ralph Fiennes for a long long overdue Best Actor win but I'll jump right out of my seat with a Fuck Yeah if Colman takes it too. Hit the jump for all the photos...

The Class of Sundance 2025

(pic via) On Monday I linked to one of the last pieces of reflecting on 2024 I'll be involved with, specifically the annual poll for Nashville Scene that I participate in every year. There are a couple more 2024 things to come, I did realize after calling that poll the last 2024 thing I had to do -- namely the Critics Choice award winners will be announced this upcoming weekend and then the winners of my LGBTQ+ critics group GALECA still have to happen! But for right this moment let's look ahead to the future! Yes we might have one! I told you this morning that I was trying to be an optimist today so let's just go with this "future" conceit for the moment.

Anyway even though Sundance officially ended this past weekend I've still got reviews from it dropping this week and perhaps into next, but I also participated in the annual Indiewire poll of the best movies that screened in Utah according to us critics, and that went up today -- see our picks here and do jot them down! These will be the movies to keep your eyes peeled for as the year goes on. I saw and liked most of the movies that did well here. I won't be reviewing them but I liked Train Dreams and Cactus Pears a lot, and the movie Sorry Baby won nearly everything it was up for on this critic's poll and it is very good. No big surprise that A24 snatched it up -- it will fit in well there. I don't know that I would've given it quite so much love, I personally tried to spread that around in my own votes, but it's an ace first film.

Callum Turner Ten Times

Semi-flabbergasted that this photoshoot (via) of the disgustingly handsome Callum Turner escaped my greedy eyes last January when he was doing press for his Master of the Air series -- thankful that I have stumbled upon the photos today then as I looked for an image to attach to news of his latest project! Well not "news" exactly -- a review, more like! His film Atropia, which he co-stars in opposite the terrific Alia Shawkat, just won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and I have reviewed the movie for Pajiba, read it here. I found it an enjoyable if not super deep movie that gets the majority of its juice from those two actors, who are very on point. Anyway staring at Callum is always a privilege so let's do it more after the jump...
